Big bird previously on the loose in Wilm. dies

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A big bird that was on the loose Thursday in the Wilmington area has died, according to Sgt. Jerry Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

The bird, described by some as an emu, ruffled some Wilmington residents’ feathers Thursday morning, prompting them to call 911 and report that the bird was on the loose.

Neighbors and animal control officials tried to capture the bird, but it eluded them.

Brewer said that the bird’s owner managed to corral it back into its cage, but it died from stress.

The WECT News crew decided they wanted in on the dance on Tuesday, and created their own version.

At nearly 4 pounds, customers construct monstrous Fuzzy Peach fro yo creation

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – In Wilmington, The Fuzzy Peach is considered a staple by some among fro yo shops – the locally-based company makes It simple to quickly pick your yogurt of choice and add as many toppings as you want for the perfect custom-made dessert.

A group of customers recently took their custom creation to a whole new level, though -- Nick Jones, Julio Sanchez and Justin Spencer made the record for the largest cup ever seen (and weighed) at the shop’s Monkey Junction location, according to the Fuzzy Peach Facebook page.

RAW VIDEO: Sea gull gets stuck during rush hour, firefighters come to the rescue

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Traffic came to a stop at Carolina Beach Road and Shipyard Boulevard Tuesday morning as firefighters made an unusual rescue.

Several police cars blocked off traffic on Carolina Beach as firefighters tried to rescue a bird that got stuck in a street pole. A couple of firefighters climbed to the top of the ladder and gently pulled the struggling sea gull from the electric pole.

Rescue crews on the scene said they believed the bird broke one of its legs, but other than that, the bird appeared to be okay.

Wildlife expert captures hog off Carolina Beach Rd.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There have been spotting of wild hogs throughout the area, including Ogden and Carolina Beach Road.

This is a picture of a hog wildlife expert Jimmy English was called out to capture. This hog was found near Immaculate Conception Church off Carolina Beach Road.

There have been reports of people spotting these deadly animals in the streets.

Whether or not wild pigs are moving through New Hanover County, English has advice for anyone approached by a big, bad boar.

"He's stronger than you are, you can't outrun him," said English, "so I would either stay out of the woods or pray."
