PAY IT FORWARD: Ashley HS raises $6K for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Ashley High School has raised over $6,000 to help a high school in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

According to a press release from New Hanover County Schools, Ashley athletes, athletic boosters, faculty, student body, UNCW volunteers, NC High School Athletic Association schools and staff, and the Wilmington community made the efforts possible.

Ashley High School will “pay it forward” by giving Point Pleasant Beach High School $6,281.

“I feel truly blessed to live and work in a community that values service to others. Our athletes, students, staff, boosters, and this community stepped up by providing funding to our teammates in New Jersey.  This is why we do what we do, and I’m very proud to be a part of this,” said Roy Turner, Ashley Athletic Director.

Remembering the 'Storm of the Century'

More than 18 homes were destroyed in hurricane-like storm surge during what became known as the "Storm of the Century."

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Two decades ago Front Street flooded as the Cape Fear River backed up with intense southerly winds. Water Street was under water and the Battleship North Carolina was above the bulkhead across the river.

More than 18 homes were destroyed in the 70 mph wind gusts and hurricane like storm surge during what became known as the "Storm of the Century."

The storm was one of the most intense in our state's history and set records up and down the East Coast.

It took the lives of 19 people in North Carolina.

Rick Stewart feared for his life as a massive tree fell at his Pine Valley home.

Raye Drive flooding fix

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – After Tuesday's drenching rains, WECT.com decided to check up on residents of a neighborhood with flooding problems.

After a quick look, we found Raye Drive was not flooded.

Neighbors complained because water wasn't draining from the street.

County workers unclogged a nearby retention pond to help alleviate the problem.

Neighbors hope this is a lasting fix.

Flooding problems leave neighbors stranded in high water

Neighbors say the storm drain system is in constant need of repair and they need help to have it fixed.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – For neighbors who live on Raye Drive in New Hanover County, a legal issue has them stranded in high water.  Folks who live in this part of town say they are constantly dealing with severe flooding issues, causing problems for people who need to get in and out of the neighborhood.

Neighbors say the storm drain system is in constant need of repair and they need help to have it fixed.  On Monday, residents met with New Hanover County maintenance engineers to get answers on how to stop the flooding.  Unfortunately, since Raye Drive is a privately owned road, it's not a county problem.  The county will respond to drainage complaints as they come in, but it's the developer's responsibility to make any permanent upgrades to the existing storm water permit.
