Bridge work on River Road on hold until June

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to Amanda Glynn with North Carolina DOT, crews have postponed work on the bridge located on River Road in New Hanover County going over Lords Creek until June.

Work was scheduled for Monday, May, 13 through Friday, May, 17. D.O.T.Crews have to perform maintenance on the substructure of the bridge.

According to Glynn, crews delayed construction to prevent traffic tie-ups during the school season. Anderson Elementary, Ashley High School, and Murray Middle school are all located around the area.

Glynn says the bridge is rescheduled to close sometime in June.

We will keep you posted on exactly when this closure will take place as soon as we get word.

City of Wilmington adding a sidewalk to Greenville Loop Road

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to the City of Wilmington’s website, the city will install a half- a- mile sidewalk on the west side of Greenville Loop Road, from Bradley Creek Elementary School to the Greenville Village Community to create a safer walking route for students and parents.

Construction will begin later this month and is expected to be complete in early August 2013.

The release also states the project is partially funded by a $211,000 Federal “Safe Routes to School” grant, with another $153,000 in matching funds provided by the city.

The construction will involve lane shifts and narrower lanes in the work area.

There will be occasional lane closures, but the closures will not occur during the peak rush hours.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane Closures on I-40 and N.C. 133/ N.C.117 bridges

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to a press release from North Carolina DOT, Weather permitting, NC DOT crews will work on routine inspections on the I-40 and U.S. 117/N.C. 133 bridges over the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County on Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12.

The inspections will require closures on the eastbound and westbound lanes on I-40 bridges and on the U.S. 177/N.C. 113 bridge between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.

Drivers should plan for extra time crossing the bridges during that week and use caution in the area.

Cross-City Trail connector nears completion

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A connector between the Cross-City Trail and Independence/Shipyard Boulevard is almost finished, according to a spokesperson for the City of Wilmington.

In January, work started to construct a multi-use path to run along Independence Boulevard between Ashton Drive and Converse Drive. Additionally, pedestrian signal improvements are being added to the current signal at Independence and Shipyard boulevards.

One NHC teacher will get to drive a new car for a year

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – One New Hanover County teacher will drive away in a new car this summer.

Toyota Scion of Wilmington will allow the teacher who wins the Educator of the Year award to drive a new 2013 Prius Two for one year, according to a news release.

Roads blocked off after car hits trash truck, flips over

Greenville Loop Rd. is closed between Hunters Mill Lane and Clearbrook Drive due to the accident.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Police responded to an accident Friday morning on Greenville Loop Rd. where a vehicle landed upside-down.

Greenville Loop Rd. was closed between Hunters Mill Lane and Clearbrook Drive.

According to a Wilmington Police officer on the scene, the driver of the vehicle clipped the side of a garbage truck and ended up flipping the vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was transported to the hospital. No word yet on how extensive their injuries were. No one from the trash truck was injured.
