Informational meeting for Marine Science Academy tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There will be an informational meeting for parents and students next week about the Ashley High School Marine Science Academy.

The new program provides a unique college-level experience by offering the equivalent of two introductory marine science courses usually taken during the first college year.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Four teams from New Hanover County Schools will advance to the 2013 Southeast State Science Olympiad Competition. Nearly 800 students recently competed in the regional event at UNCW.

The following schools won trophies for overall team scores and will advance to the State Science Olympiad Tournament on April 26-27, 2013, at N.C. State University in Raleigh:

 Division B (Middle School)

  • 1st place- Roland-Grise Middle School

Division C (High School)

  • 1st place- Hoggard High School
  • 2nd place- Isaac Bear Early College High School
  • 4th place- Laney High School

According to New Hanover County Schools, 14 students were awarded a combined total of $10,500 in scholarships.

New Hanover County Schools' students excel  at regional and international science fairs

The 2013 Regional Science Fair was held on February 9, 2013, at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. 

More than 14 different school districts, as well as various private schools, were represented at the fair.

This year, 75 awards and special awards were presented to the approximately 180 students who participated.

Thirty-three New Hanover County Schools students will represent NHCS at the upcoming Southeast Regional Science Fair. The competition will be Saturday, February 9, 2013, on the campus of the University of North Carolina –Wilmington.

These students and several others were honored for their science projects during the recent New Hanover County Science Fair that was held on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Murray Middle School.

Rep. Susi Hamilton to speak to elementary school students

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – NC House Representative Susi Hamilton will speak to students at an area elementary school Friday, according to a New Hanover County School System spokesperson.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Hamilton will speak to fifth grade students at Bradley Creek Elementary School about being a Representative, women serving as elected officials, and more.

Her speech ties in with students learning about the branches of government and women in politics in their school curriculum.

NHC Schools hosting annual science fair Thursday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The annual New Hanover County Schools’ science fair will take place Thursday at Murray Middle School, according to a school system spokesperson.

Third through 12th grade students will be entering their projects in a variety of categories, including biology, earth science, physical science, technology and engineering and more.

Officials from the community, including area businesses and government agencies, will judge the projects from 4:15 p.m. to 6 p.m.
