NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Policy Committee of the New Hanover County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 3:00 p.m., in the NHC Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

The New Hanover County Board of Education will meet for a Closed Session pursuant to NCGS 143-318.11 (a)(1)(3) immediately following the Work Session scheduled on May 21, 2013, at 4:00 p.m., in the NHC Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.

New principals appointed to Ashley, Hoggard high schools

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Two new principals were recently appointed to two New Hanover County schools for the 2013-2014 school year, according to a school system spokesperson.

Jackson Norvell will serve as Ashley High School's new principal, while Steven Sullivan, Ed.D., will serve as Hoggard High School's.

Norvell is currently an assistant principal at New Hanover High School, and has previously been an assistant principal at Pine Valley Elementary School, and Pender County's Cape Fear Middle School. He also served as an intervention specialist at Noble Middle School and an instrumental music teacher at both Roland-Grise Middle School and Topsail Middle School.

Norvell graduated from UNCW with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of School Administration degree.

New Hanover County Schools to Sponsor First Annual Teacher Trot 5K

New Hanover County Schools will host the First Annual Teacher Trot 5K Race on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The inaugural event will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will be held at Ashley High School.  Proceeds raised from the event will help to support staff wellness and student physical education programs.  The event is being sponsored by North Carolina Farm Bureau and Port City Neurosurgery.

“The Teacher Trot is a great opportunity for New Hanover County Schools employees, students, parents and community members to run together in an effort to build our district’s wellness programs,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley, an avid runner. “NHCS encourages both employees and students to put their physical wellness as a priority. Healthy lifestyle habits are essential for learning.”

Free screening exams scheduled soon for NHC student athletes

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Free athletic screening exams will be offered soon to athletes and cheerleaders who attend school in New Hanover County, according to a school system spokesperson.

All students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading during the 2013-2014 school year are required to undergo a screening examination, per the state’s requirements.

Exams for girls will take place Thursday, May 23 at the following locations:

6 p.m.

  • Williston
  • Holly Shelter
  • New Hanover
  • Myrtle Grove
  • Roland-Grise
  • Hoggard

Three NHC students receive Dell Scholarships

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Three Wilmington high school seniors each recently received a 2013 Dell Scholarship, according to a New Hanover County Schools spokesperson.

Dell scholars are recognized for their academic potential and determination.

Darsha Pigford of Hoggard High School, and Brittany Jones and Tre'Nautica Smith of New Hanover High School were chosen among thousands of applicants across the country.

Apply now for a seat in the Spanish Immersion Program at Forest Hills

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Forest Hills Global Elementary School is accepting applications for its Spanish Immersion Programming for the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

According to a news release, applications will be accepted from families who live outside of the school’s attendance zone for a limited number of seats in the kindergarten class.

The seats will be filled by a lottery process.

“Forest Hills is very excited about the growth of our Spanish Immersion Program,” said Principal Deborah Greenwood in a news release. “We encourage families to consider the unique learning opportunities that the program will offer their kindergarten students. In today’s global society, learning a second language will help to advance a child’s education and future career.”

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 17, 2013.

Greenville Loop sidewalk project expected to begin this week

Crews are expected to start work on the installation of a half-mile section of sidewalk along Greenville Loop Road this week.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Crews are expected to start work on the installation of a half-mile section of sidewalk along Greenville Loop Road this week.

The sidewalk should be complete late this summer and will connect Bradley Creek Elementary to the Greenville Village Community.

The goal of the sidewalk is to create a safer walking route for students and parents.

Drivers in the area should prepare for delays during the project, which will involve lane shifts and narrower lanes.

According to the city, the project is partially funded by a $211,000 federal "Safe Routes to Schools" grant, with another $153,000 from the city.
