Gator visits family neighborhood

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Marsha Roush got quite a surprise while walking her dog Monday afternoon.

They came across a 6 foot alligator in the Beau Rivage area.

She got out her cell phone and took a video of the incident and sent it to WECT via See it, Snap it, Send it.

"He just looks scared and lost," Roush said about the alligator in her post.

Greenville Loop sidewalk project expected to begin this week

Crews are expected to start work on the installation of a half-mile section of sidewalk along Greenville Loop Road this week.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Crews are expected to start work on the installation of a half-mile section of sidewalk along Greenville Loop Road this week.

The sidewalk should be complete late this summer and will connect Bradley Creek Elementary to the Greenville Village Community.

The goal of the sidewalk is to create a safer walking route for students and parents.

Drivers in the area should prepare for delays during the project, which will involve lane shifts and narrower lanes.

According to the city, the project is partially funded by a $211,000 federal "Safe Routes to Schools" grant, with another $153,000 from the city.

Masonboro Island reserve committee to provide feedback

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The local advisory committee for the Mansonboro Island part of the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve will meet in Wilmington next week.

The committee is made up of local residents, partners and leaders. They will provide the NC Division of Coastal Management’s Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve staff with feedback regarding management of the reserve.

According to a press release, the program protects natural areas for education, research and compatible recreation.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the Habitat Conference Room of the UNCW Center for Marine Science, March 11 at 6 p.m.

Volunteer gather data to learn more about homelessness

Volunteer gather data to learn more about homelessness

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Trained volunteers will take a snapshot of areas experiencing homelessness in our community over a 24-hour period to gather various data elements.

The annual Point-In-Time is sponsored by the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness, which compiles data across the state.

The count is a piece of unduplicated demographic information in which staff and volunteers gather data including gender, race, cause of homelessness and where people are sleeping.

The data collection will take place Wednesday in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. The results will be calculated and analyzed in February and released to the public via www.wilmingtonhousing.org.

The kick off for the trained volunteers will begin at 5 p.m.

Roads blocked off after car hits trash truck, flips over

Greenville Loop Rd. is closed between Hunters Mill Lane and Clearbrook Drive due to the accident.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)  - Wilmington Police responded to an accident Friday morning on Greenville Loop Rd. where a vehicle landed upside-down.

Greenville Loop Rd. was closed between Hunters Mill Lane and Clearbrook Drive.

According to a Wilmington Police officer on the scene, the driver of the vehicle clipped the side of a garbage truck and ended up flipping the vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was transported to the hospital. No word yet on how extensive their injuries were. No one from the trash truck was injured.

Join a flash mob to raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – There will be a flash mob Sunday afternoon at Mayfaire Town Center to raise awareness and educate the community about cystic fibrosis.

The event is in honor of Jozie who was born with cystic fibrosis a year ago. She will be celebrating her first birthday.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is searching for a cure that will impact more than 70,000 people around the world.

Click here to learn the dance to participate in the flash mob at 4 p.m. in front of Regal Mayfaire Cinema’s fountain.

An optional rehearsal will take place at Techniques in Motion School of Dance in the Monkey Junction area.
