Residents who are not currently receiving Food and Nutrition Services benefits may qualify for temporary assistance for a one-month period if the following criteria are met:

  • The home was damaged or destroyed

  • The resident lost income
  • There was food loss as a result of a power outage of at least eight hours from Hurricane Irene

Eligibility is based on available income and resources, according to NHC’s Mark Boyer.

Gov. Perdue secured the food assistance through her request for a presidential disaster declaration that was approved last week.

“We have been working diligently with our federal and local partners to ensure that North Carolinians affected by Hurricane Irene get the help they need,” Gov. Perdue said in a news release. “There is no more urgent or essential need than food. State officials and local departments of social services are working to make sure that people living in the counties hit hard by the storm are able to apply for this emergency assistance.”

NHC yields third highest number of DWI citations over Labor Day

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – Nearly 3,000 people across North Carolina were cited for driving while impaired during the Labor Day Booze it & Lose it campaign, which ran Aug. 19 - Sep. 5.  New Hanover County netted the third highest number of citations of counties in the state.

“It is important to educate motorists about the dangers of drinking and driving,” Secretary Conti said. “The Governor’s Highway Safety Program, along with state and local law enforcement officers, worked hard during this Labor Day to remove drunk drivers from our great state’s highways. Removing violators makes our roadways safer, and safety is our top priority.”

Officers across the state conducted over 8,000 checkpoints and dedicated patrols.  Counties with the highest number of DWI citations include Mecklenburg at 217 and Wake at 203.  New Hanover County fell in third with 133 citations.
