NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Senior Resource Center seems to be the main reason why someone would or would not recommend living in New Hanover County, according to a recent citizen survey.

County government paid Insight Research, a Greensboro-based company, $14,775 for it to handle evaluate a survey sent to about 3,600 homes. The county received 567 completed surveys.

An executive summary from the research group mentioned the return rate could have been higher if the survey was done at a different time than the holiday season.

The top four priorities for respondents are: 1.) A strong economy, 2.) A planned environment, 3.) Safety and a secure community and 4.) Preparing all students for success. People could choose from a list of nine priorities.

Families living in New Hanover County generally enjoy their experience and would recommend the area to others, according to the survey’s executive summary.

The following is background on the survey participants:

  • About 80 percent use the internet at least once a day
  • Nearly 30 percent are under the age of 50, 35 percent are 50-64 and about 37 percent are older than 65
  • 83 percent own a home, while 17 percent rent
