WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police are investigating two robberies at convenience stores early Monday morning.
The first happened at the Handee Hugo's on Shipyard Boulevard around 1:00 a.m. A store employee says two men came into the store. One had a shotgun.
The armed man ordered the employee to get on the floor while the other man jumped the counter and tried to open the register. They stole money and cigarettes.
The second robbery was also at a Handee Hugo's off North College Road across from Corning around 2:00 a.m. A store employee says a man approached her while she was smoking a cigarette outside and asked for the keys to the safe. He kept one hand inside his sweatshirt pocket as if he had a gun.
The employee said she didn't have access to the safe, and the robber said to open the register or he would hurt her. The man left with some money.
If you have any information on either robbery, contact Wilmington police. Officers say they will pay close attention to convenience stores in light of these recent crimes.
