WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As the cooler weather moves in to the Cape Fear Area in the mornings and nights, area hardware stores are promoting ways to weatherize your home.

Representatives with the Myrtle Grove Home Depot said October is "weatherization promotion month," and they suggest checking out all the products and helpful services local hardware stores can offer to keep your energy bills low.

Mike Callan, the assistant store manager at the Myrtle Grove Home Depot, suggested a few items you can buy for a decent price that make a big difference in energy efficiency practices.

"Make sure your HVAC system has recently been tuned up. Also, look into an insulation blanket to put around your water heater. A programmable thermostat allows you to adjust it so at night, the heat sets  at a lower temperature, since most are wrapped up in bed blankets anyway. As we get into temperatures below 32 degrees, you will want to check out items that prevent freezing on your pipes," said Callan.

Callan added that there are also some new, inexpensive weather strip options for the bottom of your door.
