NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Animal control had to put down a dog that attacked a sheriff's deputy Wednesday afternoon.
The dog lost to much blood during surgery, according to Sgt. Jerry Brewer. Staff was forced to put the animal to sleep.
A deputy shot the dog after arresting someone in Monkey Junction.
Brewer reports the officer fought off the dog, but it kept attacking. The deputy shot the dog in the leg.
Animal Control picked up the wounded animal.
Detectives first arrived at the Horn Road home to serve a warrant. They arrested Joshua Wilt, wanted in Orange County for failure to pay child support.
He has to pay $1,000 cash to be released from jail. The Sheriff's Office reports that Wilt owes up toy $30,000 in child support.
The dog survived the gunshot. Brewer said no one at the residence claimed the part chow mix. Chow chows are listed as aggressive dogs and not adopted by Animal Control.
