NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Tuesday was the deadline for residents in the Monkey Junction area of New Hanover County to fight annexation.
So far, about 75 percent of petitions against annexation were returned to the county. Only 60 percent were needed to defeat Wilmington’s annexation plan.
Representatives from the City and property owners can review the petitions next Monday and decide if they want to challenge any of the documents.
The Board of Elections will meet December 9 to certify the results. When that happens, the City of Wilmington cannot re-visit annexation of that area for three years.
