Free mammograms at NHRMC hit record number

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Pink Ribbon Fund of New Hanover Regional Medical Center recently provided a record number of mammograms for women who can't afford them.

On average, about 70 people, women and men, come in for the free diagnostic screening. In April, 120 vouchers were given out.

The free mammograms are made possible through monies raised from Pink Ribbon fundraisers, including the annual Pink Ribbon dinner held every October.

The Pink Ribbon Project also provides comfort bags to women and men undergoing cancer treatment.

Recipients of the free mammograms do have to provide proof they are in need of assistance. They are also required to have a doctor's order.

Iris Baker is the director of the voucher program. She says the vouchers are easy to get.

Major employers add e-cigarettes to no-tobacco policies

E-cigarettes are gaining popularity among smokers, but not all employers are on board with the idea.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Electronic cigarettes are gaining popularity among smokers, but not all employers are on board with the idea.

More and more companies are creating policies for using the smoking alternative at work.

E-cigarettes are not allowed anywhere at New Hanover Regional Medical Center – and that goes for employees too. A spokesperson for the hospital said administrators recently notified staff about this change.

Health warnings from the FDA prompted the change, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Employees with New Hanover County government are under the same restrictions. E-cigarettes are lumped in with the county's larger tobacco policy.

The City of Wilmington is also working on a similar scenario. An updated draft of its tobacco policy includes E-cigarettes, but a spokesperson said city workers will have a year's advanced notice before it takes effect.

Just four years ago Josh was like any typical teenage boy – energetic and athletic. He did have epilepsy, so when he crashed his car coming home from work one day, his family immediately thought it was a seizure.

A CT scan, however, showed Josh had a malignant brain tumor.
