Back to school means a few administrative changes at Ashley HS

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Back to school is just around the corner and school officials at Ashley High School have made a few changes.

According to the school’s website, some minor changes have been made to traffic patterns, parking, dress code and discipline at Ashley High School.

The school is asking parents to check out this link to find all the information and more as it pertains to the return to school.

Open House for 10th-12th grade will be held Tuesday, August 21 from 5-7 p.m. Freshman orientation will be held Wednesday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

12th case of rabies confirmed in New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 12th case of rabies has been confirmed in New Hanover County, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Thursday, Animal Services picked up a raccoon that had been fighting with a dog in the area of Barnett Avenue. After the raccoon was secured, it was transported to the state lab and euthanized, then tested for rabies.

Friday, it was revealed that the raccoon tested positive for the disease.

Officials then let the dog’s owner know the results, who had handled the dog when the raccoon incident occurred. Animal service officials then confirmed that the dog had been re-boostered.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud (NCPHIF) will hold a “SmartPower” workshop on “Protecting Yourself from Home Repair Contractor Fraud and Scams.” 

The workshop will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the David M. Paynter Assembly Room, Northeast Regional Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Road, Wilmington, NC 28405,  10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.   The workshop is free and open to the public.

The NCPHIF is holding the workshop because they get lost of phone calls from homeowners who have been scammed. These workshops are held all over the country including Joplin, Missouri and Birmingham, Alabama where major tornadoes ripped houses apart. 

 During the workshop attendees will learn how to recognikze typical scams, how to find and check out a contractor, whay you will want included in your contract and much more.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools released its open house schedule for the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend an open house event to learn more about the school before the first day of classes. The first day of school for traditional calendar students is Monday, Aug. 27, according to a news release.

The open house schedule, provided by NHCS, is provided below:

Traditional Elementary Schools
All traditional elementary school open houses will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 during each school’s designated time.
Hours: 5 until 7 p.m.

Old Navy to host party with special guest Jordan Knight

Old Navy to host party with special guest Jordan Knight

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A party hosted by Old Navy will be held in Wilmington on Saturday with special guest Jordan Knight of New Kids On The Block performing, according to a press release from spokesperson Katherine Perry .

The celebration is part of the Old Navy Funnovation Nation Tour, and Wilmington was chosen as one of four places where a consumer submitted a video and won the chance for the party, along with a $10,000 grant for the Brigade Boys & Girls Club.

Old Navy asked contest participants to create a video and explain in a minute or less “what makes them fun, and whether they have what it takes to rally their community into unleashing the fun they have within.”

Along with Knight, the musical group Tigger Clarkson Band will perform. There will be food, prizes, contests and much more.

The first 20 guests who check into the Funnovation Nation on Foursquare will receive a $50 Old Navy gift card.
