Sign-up sessions for joining Cub Scouts to be held

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Families interested in signing their sons up for Cub Scouts will have the chance to do so soon, according to a news release -- local Scouts are hosting the following sign-up sessions at several New Hanover County Schools:

Codington Elem. - Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

  • Carolina Beach Elem. - Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Mary C. Williams Elem. - Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Holly Tree Elem. - Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Bradley Creek Elem. - Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Alderman Elem. - Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Parsley Elem. - Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Anderson - Sept 13 at 6:30 p.m.

10 graduate from NHRMC’s Clinical Pastoral Education program

10 graduate from NHRMC’s Clinical Pastoral Education program

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Ten of New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s chaplain residents celebrated graduating on Friday morning, according to the news release.

The chaplains, who all have various religious denominations, completed year-long residency training in the hospital’s Clinical Pastoral Education program. There, they were taught how to give pastoral care in hospital settings.

This is the first time NHRMC and Cape Fear Memorial Hospital will have ten chaplains available.

Last August, the chaplains began giving spiritual and emotion care to patients, families and staff at the 17th Street and Cape Fear Hospital campuses.

13th case of rabies in NHC identified in fox

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The 13th case of rabies this year has been confirmed in New Hanover County, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office

On Monday, Animal Services went to a home along Antoinette Drive to pick up a fox that had reportedly fought with a dog, which they transported to the state lab to be tested. It was later determined that the fox tested positive for rabies.

The dog’s owner was then notified of the fox’s status. Luckily, the dog was up-to-date on its rabies vaccination, and there was no human contact during the fight that occurred. Still, the dog was re-boostered following the incident.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools released its open house schedule for the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend an open house event to learn more about the school before the first day of classes. The first day of school for traditional calendar students is Monday, Aug. 27, according to a news release.

The open house schedule, provided by NHCS, is provided below:

Traditional Elementary Schools
All traditional elementary school open houses will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 during each school’s designated time.
Hours: 5 until 7 p.m.

NHRMC to host celebration for cancer survivors

NHRMC to host celebration for cancer survivors

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover Regional Medical Center will soon be celebrating the lives and accomplishments of those who have beaten cancer.

According to a news release, the company will host a Cancer Survivors’ Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be held at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center, where those in attendance (along with their families and friends) are invited to enjoy live music and entertainment as well as talk to doctors, nurses and caregivers.

Back to school means a few administrative changes at Ashley HS

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Back to school is just around the corner and school officials at Ashley High School have made a few changes.

According to the school’s website, some minor changes have been made to traffic patterns, parking, dress code and discipline at Ashley High School.

The school is asking parents to check out this link to find all the information and more as it pertains to the return to school.

Open House for 10th-12th grade will be held Tuesday, August 21 from 5-7 p.m. Freshman orientation will be held Wednesday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
