Prepare for the next hurricane at Verizon Wireless on Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Verizon Wireless and the American Red Cross have teamed up to host a Hurricane Readiness event in Wilmington on Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Preparation for a storm, tips for maintaining wireless communication during severe weather and instructions on how to set up your own disaster safety kit will reportedly be discussed. There will also be giveaways and coloring books for children.

The free event will be held at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store located at 4512 Oleander Drive, Suite 800.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The Wilmington Women’s Soccer Association league is holding registration now for the fall season.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 15 and the tentative start date is Aug. 24. All skills levels over the age of 18 are welcome.

The registration fee is $45 per player.

Ticketmaster teams up with area Walmart

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Want to hit that big concert, but hate going all the way to Ticketmaster?  Good news for you... Ticketmaster is coming to the Wilmington Walmarts, according to a news release.

The new deal between the two companies will bring Ticketmaster to your neighborhood Walmart, along with 41 others across the state.

Using point of sale touch screens located in the electronics departments, you can now browse available tickets for family shows, concerts and sporting events.  Once you find the event you want, a Walmart employee will help you complete the sale and print the tickets before you even leave the store!

“By integrating ticketing into Walmart stores, we are able to offer fans this very convenient way to learn about upcoming events, purchase and take home tickets without leaving their neighborhood,” said Nathan Hubbard, CEO of Ticketmaster.  “In addition, Ticketmaster will continue to work closely with our clients to create exclusive high value offers for Walmart customers.”

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The New Hanover County Planning Board will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, August 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Here are a few items of interest listed on the agenda:

  • Election of officers
  • Rezoning of 3200 and 3204 N. Kerr Ave. from AR airport residential to CD Conditional Airport Industrial
  • Extending deadline for amortization of non-conforming freestanding signs on Carolina Beach Rd.

The meeting will take place at the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse, located at 24 North Third Street, in room 301.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Meet the Wilmington Hammerheads at Buffalo Wild Wings in Monkey Junction Thursday night.

Former Hammerhead player Chris Bagley will rejoin Coach David Irving’s team as the end of the regular season draws near and the playoffs are just around the corner.

Pleasure Island Soccer Association is Bagley’s player sponsor and is hosting the meet and greet at Buffalo Wild Wings Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Cameron Art Museum announced the following public events for this month:

Thursday, August 4: Musicians Lisa and Galen will be performing original acoustic music from 7:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. Program admission is $5.00 for members, and $10.00 for non-members.

Sunday, August 7:  Wilmington artist/art educator Ben Billingsley and his parents Catherine and Carl Billingsley share their thoughts and creative process through their work in the exhibition State of the Art/Art of the State currently displayed at the museum. Join the discussion and find out more about this artistic family. This event  will start at 7:00a.m.through 3:00 p.m., museum members are free.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The City of Wilmington’s council meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of City Hall.

  • Presentation on property evaluation from New Hanover County
  • Resolution Modifying the Scope of JAG Grant from Supporting Additional DNA Testing to Purchase of Police In-Car Cameras and Police Bicycles
  • Resolution Authorizing the Award of the On-Call Construction Material Testing Service Contracts
  • Resolution Authorizing Execution of Municipality Mutual Aid Agreement with New Hanover County, the Town of Carolina Beach, the Town of Kure Beach and the Town of Wrightsville Beach
  • Resolution Establishing a Public Hearing for the Consideration of Amending the Transportation Corridor Official Map for Military Cutoff Extension
