Museum turns into Christmas wonderland for kids

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Children's Museum of Wilmington is inviting Santa Claus to visit and spread some Christmas cheer.

The museum is holding its annual Candyland Christmas event on Sunday, December 4 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Children can visit with Santa and get their picture taken.  They'll also be able to mix magical reindeer food, build candy cottages, create arts and crafts, design ornaments, and listen to stories.

New Hanover High School's chorus will sing holiday music to keep everyone in the spirit.

Tickets are $20 for children who are members of the museum and $25 for non-members.  Parents, guardians, and grandparents can attend for free.

Commissioners approve $1.3 million sale for new mental health center

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners met Monday morning and approved the sale of four acres of land to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

According to Mark Boyer with the county, the land is a part of a larger, 13-acre tract off Physicians Drive.

Construction of a new Southeastern Center for Mental Health will reportedly be funded by the $1.3 million sale.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It’s happy hour at Firehouse subs and customers can sample the new Coca-Cola Freestyle Fountain.

The new drink machine allows guests to choose from more than 120 beverage brands or mix their own favorite drink combinations.

"The first time we saw Coca-Cola Freestyle, we knew it would revolutionize the beverage industry," said Robin Sorensen, co-founder of Firehouse Subs. " It offers an interactive experience that when combined with our subs, is unmatched. “

The unit is touch-screen operated and offers regular and low-calorie beverages, including flavored waters, sports drinks, lemonades and more.

Murray Middle students show 'Pom Pom Zombies, the Musical'

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The public is invited to Murray Middle School's version of Stephen Murray's Pom Pom Zombies, the Musical.

Theatre teacher Hilary Peoples will direct the musical, which features hits like "School's Out," "Don't Touch the Hair," "It's Cool to be a Nerd," "My Girlfriend's Dead (And I'm Gonna Be in Trouble)," "Voo-Doo Shoo-Be-Doo" and "Doin' the Zombie."

Here are the show's scheduled performances:

  • Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person and the event will take place at the Minnie Evans Arts Center, located at 605 Halyburton Memorial Parkway.

Cape Fear Academy announces new Head of School

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Cape Fear Academy announced Thursday the appointment of a new Head of School.

Donald S. Berger, currently the Head of School at Cary Academy, will succeed John B. Meehl who is retiring.  Berger’s will begin in the position July 1, 2012.

"We are pleased to announce, after an extensive nationwide search, the appointment of Don Berger to the position of Head of School,” said Bill Squire, the Chairman of the Cape Fear Academy Board of Trustees.  “He has the unique combination of leadership skills and experience to help us continue providing our community with a growing and dynamic college preparatory educational environment."

Berger said he is excited to be coming to Cape Fear Academy.

Jews in the Port City event to be held tonight

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – "A Connected People: Jews in the Port City" will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Author of "Down Home: Jewish life in North Carolina," Leonard Rogoff, will be speaking on how the local historic Jewish population shared culture and commercial commonalities with other Jewish communities.

There will be a mix and mingle after the presentation at 7 p.m. This event will last until 8:30 p.m.

Sea Dawgs plan open try-outs for Dec. 17

Sea Dawgs plan open try-outs for Dec. 17

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Open try-outs will be held for the 2012 Wilmington Sea Dawgs basketball team on Saturday, Dec. 17.

Interested players may arrive as early as 9:30 a.m. at the gym. The tryouts will be held from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Wilmington Family YMCA. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must have a high school degree or equivalent.

Registration forms will be available onsite or online at www.wilmingtonseadawgs.com. All registrations will be taken prior to the start of the tryout at a charge of $10, according to a news release.
