Safely dispose of unwanted medications this month

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you’re looking to get rid of dated or unwanted medication, drop it off at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Medical Mall later this month.

NHRMC, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, CFCC, Safe Kids NC, Cape Fear Clinic and Cape Fear Coalition for a Drug Free Tomorrow is holding a Medication Disposal Event Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We are very pleased to host this event for the community,” says Kathy Rawlings, RN case manager and nurse educator for the Outpatient Pharmacy at NHRMC.  “Since we began holding these events, we have collected thousands of pieces of unneeded medications and kept them from becoming hazards to our community and our environment.”

Having unnecessary medications in the home can be dangerous. Old medications could be confused with current medications; children could be poisoned by them; and pets could be harmed if they ingest medications dropped and not picked up.

All medications brought to the event should be in their original containers to help identify the medication.

Law enforcement officers will be on hand to accept the controlled substances and will properly dispose of them.

Medications can be prescriptions, over-the-counter, vitamins or herbal.
