"Beauty spots" attract attention in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Three areas in Wilmington are being recognized for their curb appeal.

The Civic Improvements Committee of the Cape Fear Garden Club has announced three winners of the first ever “Beauty Spot Outstanding Landscape Award.”

Carrabba’s Restaurant on Market Street was selected in the business category. The Village at Mott’s Landing on Sanders Road won in the category of Neighborhood Entrance. Joseph Pawlik was the residential winner for his home at 302 S Second Street. 

Winners were selected from a pool of nominations for attractive landscaping along street fronts.

Each winner will be recognized on Thursday, Nov. 6. They will each receive a Beauty Spot sign to be placed within the landscaping and displayed throughout the fall season.

Fire stations open for trick-or-treating tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Fire Rescue and Wilmington Fire Department’s fire stations are offering safe locations for children to trick-or-treat tonight.

The stations will be open from 5:30 until 8 p.m. for children to meet the firefighters, visit the station and pick up their Halloween treats, according to Matt Davis.

The following locations will be open:

  • NHCFR Station 11, Wrightsboro, 3515 North Kerr Ave.
  • NHCFR Station 12, Sutton Lake, 3805 Highway 421 North
  • NHCFR Station 13, Castle Hayne, 5311 Castle Hayne Rd.
  • NHCFR Station 14, Porter’s Neck, 907 Porter’s Neck Rd.
  • NHCFR Station 16, Ogden, 7375 Market St.
  • NHCFR Station 17, Murrayville, 5901 Murrayville Rd.
  • NHCFR Station 18, Myrtle Grove, 5636 Carolina Beach Rd.
  • NHCFR Station 19, Federal Point, 9815 River Rd.
  • WFD Headquarters, 801 Market St.
  • WFD Station 2/3, 3933 Princess Place Dr.
  • WFD Station 4, 310 Wallace Ave.
  • WFD Station 5, 1502 Wellington Ave.
  • WFD Station 6, 3939 Carolina Beach Rd.
  • WFD Station 7, 3230 South College Rd.
  • WFD Station 8, 601 Eastwood Rd.
  • WFD Station 9, 1201 Military Cutoff Rd.
  • WFD Station 10, 6102 Oleander Dr.
  • WFD Station 15, 3335 Masonboro Loop Rd.

Here are some tips from New Hanover County Fire Rescue for pedestrians to stay safe on Halloween:

  • Children under 12 should trick-or-treat and cross streets with an adult.
  • Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
  • Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Parents should remind children to watch for cars that are turning or backing up.
  • Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Walk; don’t run, across the street.

Fall Festival planned at Williams Elementary on Friday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Williams Elementary School is hosting its Fall Festival on Friday, Oct. 28 from 6 until 8 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the school’s PTA, will include trick or treating, food, games and a costume contest.

Alderman Elementary plans fall festival for Friday evening

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Alderman Elementary School is celebrating the weather cool down and the season with a fall festival on Friday, Oct. 28.

The public is invited to the school between 6 and 8 p.m. to enjoy hay rides, a cakewalk, games and a bake sale. Chairs that were painted by students will also be raffled off during the evening.

Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover marching bands to perform tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The Marching Band Showcase, featuring bands from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover high schools, was originially scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18, but it has been rescheduled because of the high risk of inclement weather.

The Showcase will now begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The event will take place in the Hoggard High School stadium, located at 4305 Shipyard Blvd., according to New Hanover County Schools. The audience will also have the opportunity to hear from middle school bands—including Holly Shelter, Murray, Myrtle Grove, Noble, Roland-Grise, Trask, and Williston.

There is no admission fee for the event.
