NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT/WSFX) – Bullying is getting a lot of attention these days in our schools, online and even in the workplace.

WECT and Fox Wilmington are teaming up with the Wilmington Police Department to take this issue head-on.

We’re co-hosting a public screening of the documentary Bully, free of charge at Thalian Hall April 18. The showing starts at 7:00 p.m.

While the event is free, you will need to get a ticket so we know how many people to expect.

You can pick up a ticket at the TV station, located at 322 Shipyard Boulevard, the Thalian Hall Box Office, or the Wilmington Police Department.

Trot Nixon to throw first pitch of Coastal Christian's first game on new field

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Baseball standout Trot Nixon will throw the first pitch of Coastal Christian High School’s first home game on the school’s new baseball field.

The school is excited about finally having its own field and are gearing up to play against rivals Wilmington Christian Academy.

The field is located at 1150 King’s Highway, behind Staples and Home Depot and the Monkey Junction Post Office.

Trot Nixon was a 2004 World Champion for the Boston Red Sox and was just placed on the “All Fenway Park Team.”

The game starts at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28.

Plant a tree in honor of Arbor Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Tree Commission will hold a celebration Friday to commemorate NC Arbor Day.

Mayor Bill Saffo will be among local leaders planting a tree Friday in Wade Park off Bethel Road.

For the 10th year in a row, Wilmington was named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. A community must meet four standards to get the recognition: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

Wilmington has also received the Tree City USA Growth Award for the 8th consecutive year. According to the city, this award recognizes environmental improvements and effective tree maintenance.

The celebration in Wade Park will take place Friday morning at 10:00.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – We’re nearing the kickoff of the 2013 North Carolina Azalea Festival.

The “Secret Garden” – the Eleventh Annual Azalea Festival Children’s Tea – takes place on Sunday, March 24, marking the unofficial start to Azalea Fest activities.

All proceeds go to benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center, which supports the Big Buddy program and free home repair for those in need.

Gov. McCrory to be keynote speaker for WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – NC Governor Pat McCrory will be the keynote speaker at Thursday’s WilmingtonBiz Conference and Expo at the Wilmington Convention Center.

According to the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, WilmingtonBiz is the region’s largest business event and attracted more than 2,500 attendees last year.

The event includes a Keynote lunch, an Expo with more than 100 exhibitors and 20 free seminars on a range of timely business topics.

“WilmingtonBiz Expo brings together our region’s business community for a day of learning, making new connections and reconnecting with others,” said Rob Kaiser, publisher of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, which produces the event.

The Keynote lunch is sold out with 750 attendees and more than 3,000 people are expected to come through the event Thursday.

The WilmingtonBiz Expo Hall will open immediately after the lunch and be open 1:30-7:00 p.m.

NHC firefighters raise highest total during the 'fill the boot' campaign

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Fire Department raised the most money during the “fill the boot” fundraising event for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by any fire department in the state.

According to a press released from the deputy fire chief, New Hanover County Fire Rescue and the New Hanover County Professional Firefighters Association raised $51,278 during the campaign, thanks to residents.

"The support of our community was overwhelming," said Lieutenant Ben Bobzien, who coordinated the department's three-day campaign. "The commitment of our firefighters and the generosity of our community allowed us to exceed our goal and receive this honor - but most importantly helping the MDA." 

According to a press release, MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.
