WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)  -Dads at Murryaville Elementary School started the Watch D.O.G.S. program Wednesday morning after a huge kick off event Tuesday night. D.O.G.S. stands for "Dads of Great Students."

The program asks dads to spend one day a year at their child's school. They can volunteer for a variety of things.

Kevin Brooks is the parent coordinator at Murrayville Elementary, he says statistics have shown having dads in the schools can improve education, and behavior for their own children and others they come in contact with.

The National program is put on by the National Center for Fathering.

Murrayville Elementary School is still taking volunteers. Murray Middle School Principal Patrick McCarty also recently sent a letter home that said they would start the program there as well.

New Hanover County Commissioner Jonathan Barfield has been driving the push to start the program in all of the New Hanover County Schools.
