NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It has been over a year since New Hanover County Commissioners voted to shutdown WASTEC, but Monday they could be one step closer to reopening the waste facility.

Commissioners will hold a 4 p.m. work session to discuss a proposed contract with Covanta Energy Corporation to take over the WASTEC Facility.

After the work session, Commissioners will meet for their regularly scheduled meeting in which the public will have a chance to give their opinion on the proposal.

This decision was put off from their last meeting, which was when Commissioners were told about a large increase to the price of operating the plant.

Renovations to WASTEC would allow the facility to process 500 tons of waste per day. It would cost $12.8 million every year to operate and maintain, but it would create its own electricity. It is still unclear how trash would get hauled and who would pay for it.

Monday’s meeting starts at 6 p.m.
