Murray Middle School performs Disney classic

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Students at Murray Middle School are performing Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr.

Just like the popular movie, the play focuses on Ariel the mermaid's quest to find true love with a human. Other characters include her friends and family and an evil sea witch.

Sea creatures will perform on roller skates and roller blades.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for students and $3 for New Hanover County Schools employees.  Children five and under are free.

Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation and Fiore Fine Flowers present Celebration of Flowers, a four-day event featuring celebrity event designer Matthew Robbins.

A fashion show, brunch, festival, and oyster roast will be held Feb. 19 to Feb. 23.

A “Garden Party Ready” Fashion Show featuring torri/bell, Gentlemen’s Corner, Reeds Jewelers, Bangz Hair Salon and Spa, Robbins and Fiore Fine Flowers will be held 7 p.m. February 19 at The Terraces at Sir Tyler.

New Hanover County Schools art students bring home 121 Scholastic Art awards

New Hanover County Schools was a major winner during the 2013 Scholastic Art Awards competition hosted recently by Barton College. This year, there were a total of 2,123 artworks submitted for judging along with 78 portfolios from 147 schools in North Carolina.

NHCS secondary students won 32 Gold Key awards, and Ashley High School senior Amie Efting was the only NHCS student to have received the Gold Key Award for her entire portfolio.

Local film needs help hitting festival circuit

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The creators of a film produced in the Wilmington area are looking for help so they can take the movie to upcoming festivals.

According to a fundraising website for The Hermit, the movie is a coming of age story that focuses on a man who has become so disenchanted with the world around him that he has chosen to remove himself from it, and a little girl with a drunk and abusive father who is searching for her own escape.

NHC students make up about 21% of Eastern District Honor Band

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than three dozen band students from the four traditional high schools in New Hanover County have been selected to participate in the state Easter District Honor Band.

The student musicians were chosen to participate through and audition process that required students to learn seven or eight scales, multiple octaves, the chromatic scale for their instruments and full solos.

The selected students will go to ECU at the beginning of February to perform with other members of the All-District Band.

The final concert will be Saturday, February 2 at 5:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

According to New Hanover County Schools, a total of 190 students were selected for the Eastern District Honor Band, representing 30 counties and up to 64 high schools. NHCS’ student participation makes up approximately 21% of the Honor Band.

Winter chorus concert to take place Thursday night

Winter chorus concert to take place Thursday night

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Ashley High School will be hosting its winter chorus concert Thursday night, according to a Facebook event created by a school official.

It will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Ashley High alumni are asked to join in and sing Silent Night at the end of the concert. A music score will be provided.

The school is located at 555 Halyburton Memorial Parkway.
