"Wear Grey for Trey" today in New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Family and friends are marking a solemn anniversary in New Hanover County Tuesday.

Six months ago today, David Doolittle and his son Trey were killed while riding on their bicycles along River Road in southern New Hanover County. Thomas Grooms, Junior was charged in the deaths after being accused of hitting them with his car.

Today, in honor of Trey, friends are marking the day by wearing the color grey. They're calling it "Wear Grey for Trey" on Facebook.

NHC Board of Education to meet Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The New Hanover County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Here are some items of interest from the agenda:

  • Roland-Grise Middle may purchase 28 iPads, one iPad Learning Lab (which includes 10 iPad2s and a Bretford Powersync Cart), one Macbook, one Macbook Protection Plan and 38 iPad covers with donated funds. The total cost is estimated at $25,000.
  • New Hanover County Schools is applying for public assistance from FEMA to recover costs incurred as a result of Hurricane Irene.
  • Pay schedule changes will be discussed for the 2012-13 fiscal year. A recommendation will be made to shift the pay date for 10-month salaried employees to mid-month.

The meeting will take place at the Dale K. Spencer Building, located at 1802 S. 15th Street.

15 local students selected for N.C. Elementary Honors Chorus

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — New Hanover County is home to 15 singers who have been selected to participate in the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus, sponsored by the N.C. Music Educators Association.

The singers will prepare for a concert to be presented at the NCMEA Annual Conference in Winston-Salem on Nov. 13. Emily Ellsworth, Director of Anima-Young Singers of Greater Chicago, will be the guest conductor, according to officials with New Hanover County Schools.

Ashley at Rose football delayed until Monday, 4:30 p.m.

Ashley at Rose football delayed until Monday, 4:30 p.m.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Due to the rainy weather on Friday night, the Ashley at Greenville Rose high school football game was postponed and will continue Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The game was cut short with about 6 minutes left in the second quarter and with Rose leading the Screaming Eagles 9-0.

 It will be the first Mideastern conference game for both teams and if Ashley wins it would be its first conference win since 2009. Both Rose (3-2) and Tom Eanes’ Screaming Eagles (2-3) are coming off of bye weeks.

Wilmington settles on lawsuit

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The City of Wilmington will pay $16,500 to settle a lawsuit with FMO Real Estate.

In June of 2010, a dispute arose between the City and FMO as to whether or not a billboard was in compliance with zoning laws of the City. The case went to court and was decided in favor of FMO, which was awarded $24,500 in attorney fees.

City park finally moving forward

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – In 2004, the Wilmington City Council granted approval to enter into a lease agreement with the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust to develop and operate the land referred to as the Alderman Park Property. The problem is neither party signed the lease.

City Council is expected to approve and sign the lease at their meeting on Tuesday, October 4th.

The property contains protected plan species such as the Venus Fly Trap, Pitcher Plan, and wild orchids. They City has worked out a multi-phase plan for the land. Phase 1 includes a gravel surface parking area, a walkway, educational platform decking, and education signage highlighting the ecological features of the site.

Phase 2 of the park would include elevated walking trails through the remainder of the park. Phase 2 is currently included in the City’s plans for the fiscal year 2015-2016.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is looking for several citizens to participate in County Government by joining a committee or council.

Citizens of New Hanover County may apply for appointment to the following:

  • NHC Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee
  • NHC Cooperative Extension Advisory Council
  • NHC Examiners of Electricians
  • NHC Jury Commission
  • NHC Juvenile Crime Prevention Council
  • NHC Board of Mechanical Examiners
  • NHC Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee

All applications are due by Oct. 3 for consideration during the Oct. 17 Board of Commissioners meeting.
