Blood donors needed after crash depletes state's supply

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The American Red Cross issued a call to action for people to donate blood, especially those with type O negative.

A crash Wednesday night, involving a tractor trailer and a church van in the Asheville area, sent 15 people to the hospital and depleted the O negative blood supply. Now, the American Red Cross is using blood supplies from areas across the region, according to Blood Center Coordinator Shannon Jordan.

O negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.

The Wilmington Blood Donation Center is currently hosting "Winter Days of Giving" and is offering all donors free goodies for participating, including coupons for free soup at McAlister's Deli and coffee at Port City Java.
